Since Indonesia entered the transition phase of its Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB), traffic across select cities has spiked by an average of 24.3% according to Waze, the navigation platform creating communities on and off the road. Data for cities, such as Jakarta, Bekasi, Tangerang and South Tangerang has revealed that with social restrictions easing, drivers are starting to take to the roads again.

Tangerang has seen the biggest rise in daily kilometres driven by Waze users in the city since the transition period began. When PSBB was initially implemented in April (23/04/2020 – 23/05/2020) driven kilometres dropped by 70%, increasing by 32.7% during the transition period (18/06/2020 – 22/07/2020) as restrictions started to lift. Traffic also increased by 20% or more in Bekasi, Jakarta and South Tangerang during the same period, rising by 22.5% and  21.7% in the respective cities.

Marlin R. SiahaanCountry Manager of Waze Indonesia, said: “At Waze, we encourage motorists to follow the Indonesian government’s guidelines, which indicate that we’re still very much in the transition phase of the PSBB social restrictions. We must remain vigilant by following all required health protocols and practicing social distancing, especially when commuting or working in the office.

“In response to the COVID-19 outbreak in Indonesia, Waze has added over 130 referral hospitals to its map in support of the crisis response. Waze users can locate the nearest referral hospitals by typing keywords such as “COVID”, “covid”, “coronavirus”, “corona virus”, and “rumah sakit corona” in the destination search bar, keeping users who need to drive informed in the safest way.”

Waze also continues to encourage governments and partners around the world to proactively contribute data on medical testing center and emergency food distribution center locations through the COVID-19 Landing Page.
