Mercedes-Benz Malaysia welcomes Amanda Zhang as its new CEO and president. In a further expansion of her role, she will also spearhead the region for Mercedes-Benz Cars SEA II. This is in alignment with the brand’s goal to cement its growth both locally and in the SEA II region, as confirmed on LinkedIn.
From 1 August 2023, Zhang assumed her leadership position, succeeding Sagree Sardien. Sardien was the driving force behind Malaysia’s electric mobility push, showcasing Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to sustainability by rolling out a series of electric vehicles (EV). This includes the locally-manufactured Mercedes-Benz EQS 500 4MATIC. Sardien hasn’t stepped far away; she currently steers as the company’s head of region overseas.

Speaking about Zhang’s appointment, Sardien expressed, “We are incredibly excited to have Amanda Zhang lead Mercedes-Benz Malaysia. With her profound leadership depth and strategic insight, we are optimistic about navigating the vibrant Malaysian market with more vigor.” She emphasized her confidence, adding, “Under Amanda’s guidance, I believe our brand will further its legacy of innovation and superior quality.”
A closer look at Zhang’s career reveals a long-standing association with the Mercedes-Benz Group. Before this Malaysian venture, Zhang served as the CEO of Mercedes-Benz Romania starting March 2021. Her association with the group spans two decades.
During the days when the group went by the name Daimler AG, Zhang functioned as the senior manager for marketing communications dedicated to the MBC European region. This tenure lasted from May 2016 up until February 2021, as reflected on her LinkedIn. Zhang’s journey with the group commenced in December 2002, marking her first role as an associate of the International Management Associate Program.
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s ambitions don’t end with Zhang’s appointment. The brand further bolstered its team by onboarding Bettina Plangger as the new vice president. She also takes charge as the head of marketing and sales for Malaysia and SEA. Her tenure started on 17 April 2023.
Plangger’s impact at Mercedes-Benz is evident. She played a pivotal role in executing the brand’s luxurious strategy, guiding her team to top-tier positions in both sales and customer satisfaction metrics.
In a dynamic automotive landscape where sustainability and luxury converge, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, under the leadership of visionaries like Zhang and Plangger, is poised for an exhilarating drive ahead.
