Today, Lloyd Austin, the US Secretary of Defence, firmly declared that Washington will not stay passive in the face of China’s growing assertiveness in the Pacific. As per his statement, America is dedicated to safeguarding its allies and partners from what he termed as “intimidatory actions” emanating from China.
Austin, currently in Brisbane to meet his Australian counterpart Richard Marles, presented his observations to the media. He pointed out the worrisome trend of Chinese coercion spreading across various regions – from the East China Sea and South China Sea to the Southwest Pacific.

Australia and the US share a mutual concern over China’s attempts to diverge from established international law, the Defence Secretary noted. “The solidarity between us and our allies is our strength and we stand ready to support them in their struggle against any bullying behaviour,” Austin declared.
These comments underscore the continuous tension within the geopolitical landscape of the Pacific region, further emphasizing the importance of maintaining balance and peace amidst such complexities.
