As the world is finally unfurling its wings for travel, digital travel platform Agoda has decided to pull back the curtain on the in-flight experiences that many travelers would rather keep hushed. Welcome to the less-than-rosy facet of air travel—something that even the most Instagrammable vacation photos often gloss over. Agoda’s freshly launched Travel Bugbears Survey 2023 dissects the irritants and discomforts that passengers commonly face during flights.
Invasion of Personal Space Takes the Cake
Traversing ten markets across Asia, Agoda’s in-depth survey reveals that the blatant invasion of personal space ranks highest on the list of pet peeves for passengers. People from South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan especially despise intrusions into their private domain, whether it’s battling for the coveted armrest or having to endure the pungent aroma of uncovered feet.
Flight Delays Put Travelers from the Philippines on Edge
Coming in a close second in the survey’s findings are flight delays, a source of universal frustration but particularly vexing for travelers from the Philippines. The survey indicates that Filipino patience is particularly thin when it comes to postponed departures—a sentiment that resonates equally among travelers from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
The Third-Wheel Issue: Loud Passengers Disturb the Peace
Noisy passengers, whether they are chattier-than-necessary seatmates, couples washing their dirty linen in public, or rambunctious groups playing their music for the whole flight to hear, rank as the third top in-flight grievance.
Notably, Australians and Malaysians tend to be more lenient towards in-flight noise, while their Taiwanese and South Korean counterparts favor quieter air travel. Interestingly, Japanese travelers are not just bothered by noise but also pinpoint rudeness towards cabin crew as their chief annoyance.
A Word from Agoda’s VP: Bringing Awareness to In-Flight Annoyances
“For many of us, the holiday fun starts the moment we board a plane,” said Liyana Jamil, Vice President of Global Partner Services, Agoda. “But while flying is generally an enjoyable experience, it sometimes comes with minor grievances. There are over 130,000 bookable flight routes on Agoda, and I hope that the findings of this light-hearted survey create awareness, increase consideration, and make the in-flight experience on any of these routes even more enjoyable.”
Malaysian Travelers Sound Off: What Irks Them the Most?
When it comes to the Malaysian viewpoint, the survey uncovers that flight delays agitate them the most. Almost a quarter of respondents singled out delays as the ultimate irritant, followed closely by impolite behavior from fellow travelers. Loud passengers and rudeness towards airline staff hold a joint third position in the roster of in-flight annoyances.
