In a strategic shift, AirAsia has declared its departure from the food delivery scene, three years post the launch of its service in May 2020. It has astutely concluded that the business area was not one it could competitively and profitably engage in. However, this is not a full exit, but rather a smart transition, with AirAsia forming a partnership with the food delivery giant, Foodpanda. This collaboration doesn’t just bolster its ride-hailing service but also opens opportunities to market an array of other services.
Under the announced partnership, both companies will incorporate each other’s key features into their respective apps. AirAsia will be integrating its ride-hailing services into the Foodpanda app, while Foodpanda will incorporate its food and grocery delivery services into the AirAsia Superapp.

Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, highlights the platform partnership’s value, enabling mutual leverage of each other’s strengths. This includes Foodpanda’s extensive food and grocery delivery capabilities and AirAsia’s comprehensive travel superapp ecosystem, including ride-hailing services. Fernandes hinted at the vast potential of this collaboration, which may extend to BigPay payment solutions, joint loyalty programs with AirAsia rewards, possible subscription plans, and more.
In response, Foodpanda, a leading food and grocery delivery service in Asia outside China, will empower the Superapp’s food delivery service. This collaboration connects millions of AirAsia Superapp users to Foodpanda’s expansive network of over 100,000 merchants and thousands of delivery partners. Jakob Angele, CEO of Foodpanda, expressed his optimism about the partnership, considering their shared commitment to providing value, variety, and convenience to their customers.

As part of this collaboration, Foodpanda app users in selected areas in the Klang Valley, with plans to extend to other regions, will now access ride services directly from their app. Meanwhile, AirAsia Superapp users will connect with Foodpanda’s extensive list of merchants and delivery partners. Simultaneously, AirAsia’s food offerings will transition towards a dine-in model.
Both AirAsia and Foodpanda will commemorate this partnership by offering their users exclusive deals on ride-hailing and food delivery services.
