The Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations, a pioneer in HIV advocacy since its foundation in 1985, is embarking on a new journey with an identity that echoes its expanded role: Health Equity Matters. This new identity captures their broader mandate, which goes beyond HIV advocacy, to include the diverse health needs of LGBTIQA+ individuals and other marginalised communities.
Championing Health Equality for All
The name change signifies a larger issue. “The name Health Equity Matters is a reflection of the real-life challenges confronting LGBTIQA+ and communities affected by HIV today,” stated Mark Orr, the President of the newly rebranded organisation. According to Orr, despite the existence of support and services, equal access remains an obstacle. He passionately argues, “The right to equitable health access is a human right, and this principle must be central to the development and implementation of health policies.”
Health Equity Matters: Beyond HIV Transmission
Though the fight against HIV remains a key goal, the newly rebranded Health Equity Matters has set its sights further. Darryl O’Donnell, CEO, emphasised that the rebranding is a tribute to those lost to and living with HIV while underscoring the organisation’s dedication to combating health inequality in the LGBTIQA+ community. “We strive to address stigma, discrimination, and the unacceptably high rates of mental illness, social isolation, and suicide within these communities,” O’Donnell remarked.

The new logo of Health Equity Matters beautifully merges the HIV ribbon with a healthcare cross, symbolizing the vibrancy and diversity of the LGBTIQA+ community and those impacted by HIV. Over the next three months, the organisation will fully roll out its new branding.
