2022 marks six years of continued growth with Bigo Live achieving an 11.9 per cent year-on-year increase in monthly active users (MAU) to reach a milestone of 32.2 million MAU in the fourth quarter of 2021, spanning across the United States to Southeast Asia.
Entering its next phase of growth, Bigo Live continues to focus on pan-entertainment offerings to provide users with an engaging and immersive live streaming experience.
Bigo Live, the leading global live streaming platform, marks its sixth anniversary this year and celebrates its continued growth, with more than 400 million users in over 150 countries across the world.
With the theme of #6inYourLife, Bigo Live will be kickstarting its 6th-anniversary celebrations with two special live streaming events – ‘Music Livehouse’, a singing and dancing competition, and ‘Livehouse’, a 31-hour live streaming concert featuring some of the best broadcasters and performers from 22 regions around the world.
Centered around a theme of “The Best of You”, ‘Music Livehouse’ will see users treated to performances from over 300 Bigo Live broadcasters. Held from 31 March to 3 April, Bigo Live users will be able to watch and vote for their favourite broadcasters and send the top 72 broadcasters to the grand finals on 8 April. Running concurrently with ‘Music Livehouse’, Bigo Live users can also watch ‘Livehouse’ where Bigo Live broadcasters will perform a 31-hour live streaming concert from 3 April to 5 April. Users can expect to catch performances ranging from magic shows, sports to cosplay, among many others.
These events aim to highlight the platform’s exceptionally talented pool of broadcasters and are part of Bigo Live’s ongoing efforts to recognise Bigo Live broadcasters who have created positive and meaningful content for viewers and users throughout the past year.
“Bigo Live has witnessed tremendous growth over the past six years, and throughout our growth, we remain committed to building a safe and trusted social live streaming platform for our users around the world. As we enter a new era of social media, we want to elevate Bigo Live into a catalyst for the creator economy, while still offering our users with an immersive and engaging live streaming experience. We will do this by continually innovating new features and activities for our users,” Mike Ong, VP, BIGO Technology said.
Since its inception in 2016, Bigo Live has grown rapidly to emerge as a game-changer in the social media industry with its speciality in live streaming. Bigo Live enters its sixth year of operations after demonstrating resilience in a post-pandemic era, achieving a milestone of 32.2 million monthly active users (MAU) – an 11.9 per cent year-on-year increase – in the fourth quarter of 2021. Having been ranked 8th in Apptopia’s ‘10 Most Downloaded Social Network Apps’ and ranked 5th in App Annie’s ‘Evolution of Social Media’ report last year, Bigo Live has retained its position as one of the top social apps and remains one of the market leaders in the live streaming space.
Throughout the past year, Bigo Live has been enlarging its talent pool of content creators and broadcasters and expanding its localised premium content library with a focus on pan-entertainment, social commerce, and gaming, via various cross-industry partnerships and a series of localised in-market activities across the region. In 2021, Bigo Live launched ‘BIGO Marketplace’, an initiative to help Southeast Asia’s e-commerce industry. Other notable events included the Bigo Live Stay Academy in Indonesia and BIGO’s Got Talent in Vietnam, where local users and broadcasters were elevated into the celebrities of tomorrow.
Bigo Live has also been improving its features with new innovative technologies such as the ‘Virtual Live’ feature. It allows users to create personalised virtual 3D avatars to represent themselves on the platform and communicate with others through a blend of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology that captures realistic facial expressions and mimics user movements as they live stream in real-time.
Most recently, the platform also launched ‘Community’, Bigo Live’s latest feature that enables users to create and manage online communities, as well as post and share original content with others with common interests. Currently available to all Bigo Live users, ‘Community’ allows users to customise the virtual social experience by classifying and organising their communities by topics and interest, and users can react to posts by sharing, liking, commenting, or tipping.
“We are encouraged by the response to our campaigns over the past year, and we thank our users for their continued support. As we expand our offerings and branch out into the pan-entertainment verticals, we will build upon existing partnerships and explore new ones to bring unique values and opportunities to our users and communities around the world. We will also continue to innovate and improve our platform so that our users can not only enjoy an immersive and holistic live streaming experience, but also experience synchronous social interaction that is an extension of the physical world,” Mike Ong continued.
