Following an announcement from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Malaysian citizens can anticipate a drop in the retail prices of fixed broadband after September this year. This revelation from MCMC comes as part of a larger move towards providing affordable access to digital services in the country.
This decision follows the introduction of the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP) on March 1. However, the Commission clarified that the reduction in prices would only become applicable once the access agreements between telecommunication providers are finalized.
The MCMC shared that most access providers have either already published their reference access offer (RAO) or are in the process of doing so. Consequently, the negotiations of access agreements, based on the published RAOs, are projected to conclude by the end of September. As a result, a decrease in broadband service prices is anticipated shortly thereafter.
The statement from the MCMC comes in response to an article by technology portal SoyaCincau, which queried the government about the proposed price revision, which was to have been effective from March 1. The report noted a lack of updates on significant price revisions and apparent slack enforcement from MCMC in the four months since the new MSAP was implemented.
On this matter, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil had stated on March 2 that the implementation of the new MSAP would result in reduced broadband service prices compared to the prior MSAP.
In related news, MCMC highlighted the availability of the government’s Pakej Perpaduan Fixed Internet Broadband, launched in early February. The package, priced lower than comparable services and offering speeds of up to 30Mbps, aims to support the B40 group, veterans, disabled individuals, and the elderly.
Priced at RM69 per month for a 24-month contract, it offers unlimited data, marking a 22% decrease from the usual RM89 charged for similar packages. As per MCMC, subscribers to this package will make a saving of RM480 over the contract period. To date, over 6,000 users have subscribed to this package.
MCMC also introduced the PPR/ PA @MyKabel package, available at RM69 per month with a 24-month contract. Offering speeds of up to 100Mbps and unlimited data, the package aims to facilitate digital activities for residents of People’s Housing Projects (PPR) and the B40 group.
