A New Chapter in Environmental Stewardship
In a remarkable demonstration of environmental commitment, Coca-Cola Singapore has recently stepped up its game in the global World Without Waste strategy. The company has rolled out an innovative line of bottles made entirely from recycled plastic (excluding caps and labels) and launched an ambitious plastic bottle collection program in Singapore.
The Evolution of Coca-Cola’s Packaging
Marking a significant advancement from the 10% recycled plastic used in their clear Sprite bottles in 2020, Coca-Cola Singapore now presents a trio of 500ml beverages – Coca-Cola Original Taste Less Sugar, Coca-Coca Zero Sugar, and Coca-Cola Vanilla – in bottles comprising 100% recycled material. This initiative not only sets a new standard in Singapore but also aligns Coca-Cola with its international counterparts in over 40 countries, including Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand, where similar eco-friendly packaging is employed.
Synchronizing with Global Green Goals
In tune with its overarching sustainable packaging strategy, The Coca-Cola Company is on a mission to make all its primary consumer packaging recyclable by 2025, with an aspiration to incorporate a minimum of 50% recycled content in its packaging by 2030. This aligns with the report of 25% recycled material in its packaging as of 2022. The new bottles, while being environmentally conscious, also adhere to the rigorous global standards of The Coca-Cola Company and comply with the Singapore Food Agency’s regulations.
Coca-Cola’s Visionary Approach
Kirsten van Zandwijk, Sustainability & Partnerships Director at Coca-Cola ASEAN & South Pacific, shared her perspective, stating, “At Coca-Cola, we believe that every bottle should have more than one life. We recognise the urgency of tackling the issue of packaging waste in Singapore and believe we have a responsibility in helping to address the issue. We are playing our part by offering innovative packaging design and leveraging the reach of our brands to actively encourage consumer participation in packaging collection and recycling and collaborating with partners across our value chain. The launch of our 100% recycled plastic bottles (excluding caps and labels) in Singapore is a meaningful step as we continue to create circular solutions.”

Propelling Recycling Efforts in Singapore
To enhance the plastic bottle recycling rates in Singapore, Coca-Cola has forged a partnership with local public waste collector SembWaste, initiating a PET bottle collection program. This program places recycling bins in nine prominent locations across Singapore, including commercial buildings and neighborhood centers/malls, simplifying the recycling process for the public.
Kok Kin Lee, CEO of SembWaste, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are pleased to support Coca-Cola’s PET bottle collection programme. This partnership exemplifies SembWaste’s dedication to building awareness and inciting better recycling practices to tackle the issue of plastic waste and promote a closed-loop circular economy.”
