As the business landscape continually shifts and molds, reflecting the ebb and flow of market forces, popular dining and retail brands in Malaysia – Sushi Tei and BORDERS – have announced they’re bidding their farewells.
Singaporean-founded restaurant chain, Sushi Tei, revealed on its Facebook page that it would be ending its Malaysian operations from June 19. The statement mentioned that Sushi Tei content and any links would be discontinued, indicating a definitive exit strategy. Despite expressing regret for any inconveniences caused, the brand conveyed heartfelt gratitude to its loyal patrons for their unwavering support over the years.

However, Sushi Tei branches in specific locations, such as Gurney Plaza, Queensbay Mall, and Ipoh Parade, according to Sushi Tei Penang’s Facebook page, will continue operations. Similarly, Sushi Tei Sabah’s statement mentioned that although they’re suspending their operations, patrons should anticipate a comeback in the near future.
Sushi Tei, still operational in Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei, follows BORDERS’ announcement of its imminent exit from the Malaysian market. The bookstore chain revealed that it would cease its operations in Malaysia by August 31, 2023, under a directive from the Berjaya Group.
Berjaya Books, which manages BORDERS Malaysia, communicated its appreciation for its loyal customers through a posted notice in one of its stores and on its official Instagram page. The brand spokesperson hinted at the possibility of reopening in the future, dependent on Berjaya Group’s discretion.
Adding to the series of exits, electronics giant Panasonic Manufacturing Malaysia also confirmed a reduction of most of its operations in the country, as stated by its cleanroom equipment supplier, CFM Holdings.
The escalating changes in Malaysia’s retail and dining industries have incited surprise and curiosity among industry observers and patrons alike. As businesses evolve in response to market fluctuations, only time will tell what new surprises lay around the corner.
