Digital infrastructure giant, Equinix INC, is extending its footprint in Malaysia with plans to inaugurate its first data centre in Kuala Lumpur by the first quarter of 2024. This development follows Equinix’s 2023 announcement of a data centre in Johor, marking its initial entry into the Malaysian market.
Malaysia’s blossoming data centre market, predominantly in Johor and Kuala Lumpur, positions the country as a growing digital hub in the ASEAN region. According to Malaysia’s Trade Minister, Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the nation’s move into the second phase of the MyDIGITAL blueprint for a digital economy is expected to maintain high demand for digital infrastructure.

Equinix’s strategic expansion aligns with Malaysia’s MyDIGITAL blueprint, positioning Malaysia as a critical colocation centre in the ASEAN region. The Kuala Lumpur-based data centre, designated “KL1,” in conjunction with the recently unveiled “JH1” in Johor, will reinforce the digital infrastructure necessary to tap into Malaysia’s burgeoning digital economy.
KL1 will offer customers access to its infrastructure, facilitating seamless connections with leading global cloud service providers such as Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud. This robust connectivity will ensure data protection in a secure environment.
Equinix’s decision to choose Malaysia for its data centres stems from the country’s rapid growth in the data centre market, majorly contributed to by Johor and Kuala Lumpur. John Dinsdale, Chief Analyst and Research Director of Synergy Research Group, emphasizes Malaysia’s dynamic market for digital infrastructure. Factors such as a robust economy, escalating demand for digital services, strategic location, and increased investments from leading hyperscale operators make Malaysia an ideal choice.
Jeremy Deutsch, President of Equinix Asia Pacific, expresses enthusiasm about extending Equinix’s presence in Malaysia’s two strategic metro areas. He affirms that this expansion will empower Malaysian businesses and multinationals operating in Malaysia to leverage a trusted platform to connect the foundational infrastructure driving their success.
