Hawaii’s Unenviable Position at the Top
Recent research spearheaded by the Florida-based personal injury law firm Anidjar & Levine has brought to light a rather unsettling reality: Hawaii stands as the most dangerous state for cyclists and motorcyclists in the United States. This analysis, drawing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data covering the years 2017 to 2021, paints a vivid picture of the risks lurking for those on two wheels.
Delving into the Study’s Core Findings
The approach of the study was methodical, juxtaposing the overall fatal crashes against those specifically involving pedal-cyclists and motorcyclists. Despite Hawaii’s overall lower road fatality figures, a staggering 31.26% of these deaths were tied to two-wheeled vehicles, a percentage towering over all other states.
In a close second, Florida reveals about 24.75% of its fatal accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles. The state is notably prominent in the total number of road incidents leading to fatalities, especially in motorcycle and bicycle accidents.
Rhode Island, despite its smaller overall number of fatal road accidents (313), reports a concerning 23.64% involving two-wheelers. Following closely are New Hampshire and Nevada, with 23.19% and 23.11%, respectively.
Conversely, Mississippi, Alabama, and Nebraska exhibit the lowest percentages of fatal crashes involving two-wheeled vehicles, with Mississippi being notably the only state where such incidents are less than 10%.
Insights from the Experts
Reflecting on the study, a spokesperson from Anidjar & Levine remarked, “Hawaii is a beautiful place to cycle, with stunning views and weather, bike tourism is on the rise. Motorcycles are also a common mode of transport but this data demonstrates that pedal and motorcyclists need to take to the road with caution, and remain doubly alert and aware of their surroundings, but also that all road users are responsible for each others’ safety”.

The Broader Implications and the Call for Safety
This research not only highlights the perils faced by cyclists and motorcyclists, particularly in states like Hawaii, Florida, and Rhode Island, but also emphasizes the need for increased vigilance and safety measures. It is a stark reminder of the importance of shared responsibility among all road users to foster a safer environment.
Through the meticulous compilation of data by Anidjar & Levine, the study not only illuminates the dangers confronting cyclists and motorcyclists but also serves as an urgent appeal for enhanced road safety protocols and a collective effort to safeguard all who traverse our roads.
