The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) announced Thursday that it will provide free ChatGPT services, a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) tool, to students from September. The university will also publish comprehensive usage guidelines in mid-August to ensure effective utilization of the advanced technology by both students and teachers.
HSUHK President, Simon Ho Shun-man, proudly stated that the institution is among the first in the city to embrace such innovative technology. This service, already in use by HSUHK faculty, will augment teaching and learning experiences, propelling academic productivity and work efficiency, he affirmed.
As a reassurance to potential users, Ho clarified that the bespoke version of ChatGPT ensures strict privacy measures, where personal data of users will not be shared with public platforms. Simultaneously, the university plans to provide training on how to responsibly use this AI tool, emphasizing the importance of respecting academic integrity.
Maintaining academic integrity will remain a priority for the institution, Ho added. The university will deploy plagiarism detection software like Turnitin to counter any potential violations, with penalties to follow upon discovery of plagiarism.
The announcement was made amidst a record-breaking surge in applications for the 2023-24 academic year, with 2,240 undergraduate and 4,250 postgraduate applications received to date. Ho expressed confidence in meeting their target of 1,700 enrolled undergraduates for the upcoming year.
In a bid to diversify the student body, HSUHK is also offering scholarships to nonlocal students. Additionally, the university will increase its enrollment quota for undergraduate students from the Chinese mainland by 100 slots, up to 250, following the Ministry of Education’s approval to increase this figure from 10 to 20 percent.
