Tunku Mahkota Johor was involved in a terrifying event that sent shockwaves through the world. The Crown Prince of Johor, Tunku Ismail Ibn Sultan Ibrahim, and his family were dangerously close to a deadly shooting at a high-end mall in Bangkok. The prince posted about the scary things on social media, giving a first-hand account that gives a clear picture of the chaos and fear that followed.
The royal family’s evening started out like any other. They were sitting in the hallway of a hotel next to the Siam Paragon, which is one of Bangkok’s most expensive shopping malls. But the peace was broken by loud screams and the clear sound of gunshots. Panic broke out, and scared people ran out of the mall and into a nearby hotel where the prince and his family were staying.
Describing the moments that followed, Tunku Ismail said, “We immediately brought our young children to a safe place by running underground with my team. The uncertainty was palpable. We didn’t know who the shooter was, what weapon they were using, or their intentions. All we knew was the sound of shots being fired.” The prince’s primary concern was the safety of his family, especially his young children. In an emotional recollection, he shared, “I can still recall what I told my kids at the time, to reassure them that Babah and Mama are here, everything will be back to being okay.”
Preliminary reports indicate that the shooting resulted in at least three fatalities and left three others wounded. Unverified videos circulating on social media platforms show terrified individuals, including children, rushing out of the mall’s exits. Security personnel can be seen trying to manage the situation, ushering people to safety.
In the midst of the chaos, Tunku Ismail’s protective instincts kicked in. He and his security team formed a human shield around his family, ensuring their safety. The prince’s wife, in a heart-wrenching scene, hugged and comforted their crying children. Recognizing the need for swift action, Tunku Ismail directed his security team to bring their vehicle to the basement, intending to evacuate to a secure location.
Initially, the plan was to head to the Malaysian Embassy. However, given the urgency of the situation and the proximity of the Singaporean Embassy, a change of plans was made. “I told them to bring us to the Malaysian Embassy, but the driver informed me that the Singaporean Embassy was closer. I immediately reached out to the Singapore Consul-General in Johor,” the prince explained.
The royal family is now safe at the embassy, under the protective watch of both Singaporean and Malaysian officials. Tunku Ismail has been in direct communication with key Malaysian authorities, including the Prime Minister and Defence Minister, updating them on the situation. The Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand has also joined them at the embassy.
Reflecting on the traumatic experience, Tunku Ismail expressed his profound gratitude to his security team and friends in both Singapore and Malaysia for their unwavering support. “This was the worst experience I have been through. Having to protect my children from a murderer. People died. May Allah bless their innocent souls. I am eternally grateful,” he said.
The prince was in the Thai capital not for a state visit, but for a football match. His team, Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), was scheduled to play against Thailand’s BG Pathum United for the Champions League Group I match at the BG Stadium. However, in light of the tragic events, he regretfully missed the match, prioritizing the safety and well-being of his family.
As investigations into the shooting continue, the international community stands in solidarity with the victims and their families. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
