Toy titan Mattel has announced the return of its iconic Barney brand, which has been entertaining kids and their families for decades. This extensive revival will cover all forms of entertainment for kids, from television and movies to YouTube videos and music, and it will also include a large variety of merchandise for kids of all ages.
The ever-popular Barney will also be featured on a variety of merchandise for adults. A new animated series based on the revamped Barney is scheduled to debut throughout the world in 2024. The series’ target audience is preschoolers, and it follows the adventures of a friendly purple dinosaur and his pals as they sing and dance their way towards more compassion, togetherness, and support for one another.
Mattel and Nelvana collaborate on a new Barney series
Mattel Television, a multinational producer and distributor of children’s animation and live-action programmes, and Nelvana, a division of Corus Entertainment, will work together on the project. Fred Soulie and Christopher Keenan of Mattel Television, and Colin Bohm, Doug Murphy, and Pam Westman of Nelvana, all veterans of the animation business, will serve as executive producers on the new Barney series. Mattel’s plan to revitalise its intellectual property portfolio and classic franchises includes the reintroduction of Barney. Barney’s universal message of compassion and love is as important now as it was when the show originally aired.
Mattel’s chief franchise officer and global head of consumer products, Josh Silverman, has stated, “We will tap into the nostalgia of the generations who grew up with Barney, now parents themselves and introduce the iconic purple dinosaur to a new generation of kids and families around the world across content, products and experiences.”
Mattel’s new Barney series will be encouraging for children
The new series will be crafted to represent the contemporary environment in which children are growing up, and will teach them valuable life skills as a result. Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of Mattel Television Fred Soulie said, ” In creating the new series, it was important to us that we properly reflect the world that kids today live in so that the series can deliver meaningful lessons about navigating it. With our modern take on Barney, we hope to inspire the next generation to listen, care and dream big. We think that parents, many of whom will fondly remember the original Barney from their own childhoods, will love the show, too.”
Mattel’s resurrection of Barney comes after the company’s successful reinvention of other classic properties like Monster High and Masters of the Universe with fresh media and merchandising. Mattel has also recently revealed that it has signed a worldwide licence agreement for the Disney Princess and Frozen franchises, giving it the ability to create a wide range of toys, games, and publishing items based on these properties.
