The strategic chessboard at Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) has seen a significant reshuffling with the introduction of Datuk Hamzah Bachee as its new group chief risk officer (GCRO) from July 1, 2023. The change symbolizes a deep-seated commitment to an effective risk management strategy that identifies, addresses, and neutralizes potential hazards to achieve Maybank Group’s business goals.
Reporting to Maybank’s Group President & CEO, Hamzah’s role is one of immense significance and he steps into the shoes of Gilbert Kohnke, who will transition into an advisory position, offering his expertise as an executive coach before his retirement from the Group on November 1, 2023.
Hamzah’s vast understanding of both established and emerging global trends aims to bolster Maybank’s capacity to handle potential economic shocks, expanding its influential footprint across the region. His past association with Maybank, where he started his career, inspires confidence in his ability to drive a robust enterprise-wide risk management strategy, a crucial part of Maybank’s M25+ strategic roadmap.

In conjunction with Hamzah’s appointment, Maybank has further fortified its risk management framework by designating Mohamed Rezwan as the deputy GCRO. Effective July 1, Rezwan will be an integral part of the Group’s functions of market risk, risk research, ESG, as well as overseeing Maybank’s international commercial bank branches and subsidiaries.
The Group President & CEO, Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli, regards these new appointments as a testament to Maybank’s effective succession planning strategy and their unwavering dedication towards nurturing talent from within their ranks, ensuring a constant flow of experienced leadership at the Group.
