Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM invites locals in Melbourne to support the Memory Walk & Jog event, scheduled for Sunday 7 May at Princes Park, Carlton North. As one of the 20 events held around the country in 2023, the Melbourne walk is an opportunity for people impacted by dementia and their supporters to come together and raise awareness for the cause.
The Memory Walk & Jog event is open to individuals or teams who can walk, jog or run at any fitness level to support Dementia Australia. Participants can register to remember a loved one with dementia or to show support for those living with the condition. According to Ms. McCabe, the event is a wonderful opportunity to “raise money and share stories” and “make a difference” for people impacted by dementia.
The Memory Walk & Jog event is particularly special for Melbourne local Isabelle, who walks with her brother Sam to remember their mother Christine, who was diagnosed with younger onset dementia at 54 and passed away. Isabelle is overwhelmed by the sense of community and heartwarming experience of being surrounded by a whole community impacted by the same condition.
The Impact of Dementia in Australia: Why We Need to Walk for a Cause
Dementia is a growing issue in Australia, with over 400,000 people of all ages living with some form of dementia. Without medical breakthroughs, this number is expected to almost double in the next 30 years. Additionally, dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia and the leading cause of death for women. Walking or jogging for Dementia Australia is a way to show support for those affected by this condition and help raise awareness for the cause.
