As New Zealand’s Prime Minister Chris Hipkins prepares for an official visit to China this month-end, he disputes the characterization by US President Joe Biden of Chinese leader Xi Jinping as a dictator.
“No, the form of government in China is a subject for the Chinese populace,” Hipkins responded to the press. When probed further about the Chinese public’s input in their government’s structure, Hipkins maintained: “Should they wish to modify their governing system, it’s a decision for them.”

Hipkins’ China journey, scheduled from June 25 to June 30, includes leading a business delegation comprising some of New Zealand’s most prominent firms. The Prime Minister is set to meet with Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Zhao Leji, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
Biden’s recent branding of Xi Jinping as a “dictator” drew sharp rebuke from China on Wednesday, describing the comments as baseless and inflammatory. This unexpected backlash follows recent efforts by both nations to alleviate tension.
