The innovative organization behind ChatGPT, OpenAI, has announced the debut of its ChatGPT Android app in Malaysia. This development comes in the wake of OpenAI’s declaration last Wednesday, pledging to expand the app’s accessibility to international users.
The Android adaptation of the AI chatbot is now obtainable free of charge on the Google Play Store. However, prospective users are cautioned to be vigilant during the app search process, as several applications with analogous logos pop up when ChatGPT is queried. A tip for safety: confirm that the ChatGPT app lists OpenAI as the publisher.
The Android app retains the functionality of the web version, necessitating users to sign in before interacting with the GPT3.5-powered (or GPT4 for Plus users) chatbot. New users have the option to proceed via their Google account, Apple ID, or by conventionally signing up with an email address. Notably, OpenAI mandates that users have a functional phone number for verification before an account is activated.
Once authenticated, users can revisit prior chats with ChatGPT across various platforms under the “History” tab and initiate new dialogues. The app brings a bonus feature to the table: the facility for users to engage with the chatbot verbally, courtesy of a built-in speech-to-text attribute.
In addition, a long press on a ChatGPT message reveals a menu that provides access to features found on the desktop version. These include the capability to regenerate a response, gauge its quality, select text, and copy text.
For those anticipating the availability of ChatGPT Plus subscriptions on the Android app, OpenAI has disclosed this as a “coming soon” feature without an exact timeline. The enhanced chatbot variant, ChatGPT Plus, delivers a GPT4 large language model, swifter response times, beta features, and guarantees access even during peak usage periods, at a subscription fee of US$20 (RM90.22).
The ChatGPT Android app made its initial appearance in the United States, India, Bangladesh, and Brazil on July 26, while Malaysians got a taste of the iOS version earlier in June.
