Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, confirmed in a public address on July 7, 2023, that business magnate Elon Musk has shown interest in boosting his investment within the country, with a formal discussion planned for the coming week.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this potential financial expansion from the Tesla CEO is testament to Malaysia’s growing allure to foreign investors, attributed to the country’s strong governance and economic management. Under his leadership, Anwar has prioritized these aspects, an approach that has borne fruit, with recent record-breaking investments from China, Japan, and Saudi Arabia.
“Successful foreign investments from powerhouse economies are a testament to our good governance and economic management. Musk’s interest in furthering his investment in Malaysia highlights this,” the Prime Minister said during his speech at the Majlis Amanat Perdana Menteri Kepada Penjawat Awam Negeri Sembilan at the Seremban City Council Hall.
In addition to the interest from Tesla’s CEO, Anwar highlighted his meetings last week with Japanese investors eager to broaden their stakes in Malaysia, marking a significant influx of capital. A few months prior, he held fruitful discussions in China, leading to the highest Chinese investment in Malaysian history.
“The Saudi Aramco Company from Saudi Arabia has also shown interest in expanding their investment in Johor. This is vital because, without investment, unemployment will rise, the economy will stagnate, and sectors such as hospitality will suffer,” Anwar stated, emphasizing the economic implications of these foreign investments.
Attending the gathering alongside Anwar were Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, and Director-General of Public Service Datuk Dr Zulkapli Mohamed.
