Sabah celebrates a new milestone in its tourism industry as T’way Air, a prominent South Korean low-cost airline, inaugurates its first-ever direct scheduled flight from Incheon to Kota Kinabalu.
This inaugural flight marks a strengthening of ties between South Korea and Sabah, solidifying the latter’s appeal as an international travel hotspot. With a full flight of 188 passengers, the new air link is already proving its worth.
Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who also chairs the Sabah Tourism Board, personally greeted the passengers at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport. He affirmed the critical role of international connectivity to Sabah’s prosperity.
“Increased direct international flights provide a pivotal balance, fostering our tourism sector while spurring economic growth in Sabah. The expanded connectivity invites more visitors to bask in Sabah’s natural splendour and cultural heritage, thereby creating job opportunities and encouraging sustainable development,” said Bangkuai.
Sabah’s enchanting natural marvels have consistently captivated South Koreans, as reflected in their leading status among international visitors to the state. With 68,685 South Korean arrivals recorded from January to April this year, the new T’way Air direct route is set to further boost this figure and forge stronger tourism connections between both locales.
Sabah’s awe-inspiring nature, cultural wealth, and world-class hospitality have made it a top choice for South Korean tourists. Sabah’s pristine islands, beaches, and golf courses are especially popular, with diving and birding also on their radar.

These events are designed to attract international participants, including South Koreans, underlining Sabah’s commitment to cementing its reputation as a go-to destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
Kim Minkeun, the regional manager of T’way Air Kota Kinabalu station, expresses excitement about bringing travellers to Sabah, a place known for its mesmerising natural wonders, rich cultural heritage, and heartwarming hospitality.
“We are thrilled to bring travellers to Sabah’s breathtaking landscape through T’way Air. We aspire to help create unforgettable Sabah memories for all our passengers,” Minkeun said.
Currently, Sabah is linked to 10 international cities. Apart from T’way Air, the region expects to welcome additional direct flights soon, indicating the continuous efforts to tap into Sabah’s full tourism potential.
This development is yet another reminder of Sabah’s escalating appeal as a global tourism destination. This news was originally reported in Malay Mail.
