Local telecommunications provider, Singtel, has debuted a short film to honor Singapore’s 58th birthday and the 100th birth anniversary of its founding prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew. The film, named ‘From Mudflats to Smart Nation,’ echoes Lee’s inspirational 1965 vision of Singapore’s metamorphosis from an undeveloped mudflat into a thriving metropolis.
Unfolding in three acts, the 23-minute documentary outlines Singapore’s trajectory from an emerging nation to a global economic powerhouse. It presents this journey through the lens of telecommunications and technology, revealing how Singapore skillfully harnessed connectivity, communication, and digital content to achieve economic strides and evolve into the ‘Smart Nation’ it is today.

The film meticulously illustrates Singapore’s communications infrastructure development in the post-independence years, its nationwide computerization in the 1980s, the subsequent adoption of Information Communications Technology with the advent of the internet, leading up to the present.
Viewers are invited on this nostalgic journey via rare footage and photos of Singapore and Lee Kuan Yew, transporting them from a rural Singaporean landscape to the thriving urban powerhouse we see today. Leaders of the Singtel Group, who participated in this remarkable transformation journey, share their unique insights.
Yuen Kuan Moon, Singtel Group CEO, asserts that this tribute comes at a critical juncture. Singapore is on the verge of mainstream 5G adoption, a critical technology milestone paving the way forward for its Smart Nation vision. He speaks of Singtel’s privilege and pride in supporting Singapore’s development throughout the decades.
Featuring interviews with key Singtel personnel such as Group CEO, Mr Yuen Kuan Moon; Group CFO, Arthur Lang; NCS CEO, Ng Kuo Pin; and others, the film uncovers both Singapore’s and Singtel’s forward-thinking strategies that propelled Singapore from a rural village to an intelligent nation.
Last July, Singtel made headlines by completing its standalone 5G rollout across the country, three years ahead of regulatory targets. This feat, coinciding with Singapore’s 57th National Day celebrations, turned the event into the country’s largest consumer use case with 25,000 spectators using 5G to live stream the parade.
As per Brand Finance, this leap in 5G leadership has contributed to Singtel ascending in brand rankings. It jumped from the 9th to 6th position globally among telecom companies and retains its title as Singapore’s strongest brand across all sectors. Singtel’s brand value has seen a rise of 6% to US$4.1 billion.
This film not only commemorates a nation’s journey but also reflects Singtel’s dedication to empowering every generation through its innovation focus and strategic investments. It is a testament to the critical role of telecommunications and technology in ensuring better lives and livelihoods for communities.
