A Legacy of Advocacy: Sir Michael Parkinson’s Unwavering Support for Dementia Australia
The world mourns the loss of the iconic broadcaster and Dementia Australia Patron, Sir Michael Parkinson CBE, fondly referred to as “Parky”, who passed away at the age of 88. Sir Michael’s dedication to the cause was deeply personal, stemming from his mother, Freda Rose’s battle with vascular dementia.
Sir Michael’s association with Dementia Australia and the erstwhile Alzheimer’s Australia NSW was profound. In 2010, he took on the mantle of Honorary International Ambassador for Alzheimer’s Australia NSW and later, in 2017, embraced the role of Patron for Dementia Australia.
His commitment went beyond titles. Sir Michael Parkinson played a pivotal role in amplifying the message about the effects of dementia, drawing from his personal experiences with his mother’s condition.
