A global marketing company, VMLY&R, in collaboration with Monolith Studios, has recently created the world’s first death metal public service announcement (PSA) for skin cancer – Sunny Death Metal. This two-minute heavy music video has been created to connect Australians with a hard-to-swallow message about the sun and its harmful effects.
HELLIOS: THE FIRST BRUTALLY HONEST SONG ABOUT THE SUN
The song has been created by Hellios, the band formed by Chris Themelco from Monolith Studios. It has been touted as the first brutally honest song about the sun, which highlights the devastating effects of melanoma. Melanoma is the most common cancer diagnosis among young Australians, with over 16,000 diagnoses recorded last year.
STANDARD PROCEDURE SUN AND SKINCARE: FIGHTING AGAINST SKIN CANCER
Zepha Jackson, Standard Procedure Sun and Skincare co-founder, said that Standard Procedure sunblock was created to offset the devastating effects of melanoma. It was born under the harsh Australian summer sun and has been designed to protect people from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays. Jackson further adds that PSAs are often too easy to ignore, but Sunny Death Metal is an exception. It is a powerful medium that connects people to a prevention-driven message in a unique way. To continue fighting against skin cancer, Standard Procedure has committed to donating 100% of their sunscreen sales on sunnydeathmetal.com to Melanoma Patients Australia.
A DIGITAL EXPERIENCE: EDUCATING PEOPLE ABOUT SKIN CANCER
After the successful release of the video, Sunny Death Metal has now introduced a digital experience in partnership with sun and skincare company Standard Procedure. The bespoke multi-purpose web experience contains music, information about melanoma, and a shop selling merch and Standard Procedure sunscreen. All the sales generated through this shop are donated to Melanoma Patients Australia to help fund skin cancer research.
VMLY&R: USING DEATH METAL TO SAVE LIVES
Ben Davis, VMLY&R executive creative director, believes that the effects of skin cancer are devastating. Through the use of Sunny Death Metal, he hopes to get people to check their skin and apply SPF to prevent future skin cancer diagnoses. Davis believes that death metal can save lives.
