In a heartfelt homage to the late, great Les Murray AM, a revered figure in sports broadcasting, the doors have opened for nominations for the third Les Murray Award for Refugee Recognition. Jointly presented by SBS and Australia for UNHCR, this award shines a light on the remarkable contributions of refugees within the Australian community.
Remembering Les Murray
Les Murray, a household name in sports broadcasting, is fondly remembered not only for his role in “The World Game” on SBS but also for his own story of resilience as a young refugee from Hungary who made Australia his home in 1956. This award, bearing his name, seeks to honor individuals whose journeys echo Murray’s remarkable narrative of perseverance and contribution.
Celebrating Refugee Contributions
Trudi Mitchell, CEO of Australia for UNHCR, passionately stated, “This award celebrates people from refugee backgrounds who are promoting positive awareness of refugees through their work in the community, including in the arts, sport, and as community leaders.” She acknowledged the challenging task faced by the judges in selecting from a list of exceptional candidates, each of whom has made significant contributions to their communities, often overcoming substantial personal challenges.
Les Murray’s Legacy Lives On
James Taylor, Managing Director of SBS, reflected on the award’s significance in commemorating Les Murray’s legacy. “We’re delighted to once again open nominations to recognize the outstanding achievements of former refugees who have been quietly making positive contributions in their communities through arts, sports or media, through this special award dedicated to Les Murray’s memory,” he remarked.
