TikTok has unveiled its latest measure to enhance transparency by affixing labels to AI-generated content, as announced by the company on Thursday. Adam Presser, TikTok’s head of operations, outlined that hyper-realistic AI content lacking proper labels will be subject to removal, as reported by Reuters.
To enforce this initiative, the platform has implemented a digital watermark system called Content Credentials, established by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, a project initiated by a US nonprofit organization.
Ensuring authenticity necessitates the utilization of the watermark by both the AI tool’s developer and the platform where the content is published. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is among the entities already employing this system, with YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook following suit.
Earlier this year, a consortium of 20 tech companies forged an agreement to collaborate in combating deceptive AI-generated content, particularly with regards to its potential interference in elections worldwide.
In a separate development, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, faced a regulatory mandate from US law compelling it to divest the short-video app or face a potential ban. In response, both TikTok and ByteDance have initiated legal action challenging the law, contending that it violates their First Amendment rights.
