Former President Donald Trump arrived in Miami to face criminal charges that have sparked heated debates and deepened political divisions. Despite the looming trial, his campaign for the 2024 Presidential Election is in full swing, unscathed by his legal predicaments. Notably, an overwhelming majority of Republicans believe the charges to be politically motivated, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The accusations involve the unlawful retention of national security documents and lying to officials. Trump maintains his innocence and remains steadfast in his commitment to run for the presidency in November 2024. His political fervor remains undeterred, even as he prepares to make his initial court appearance in a Miami federal courthouse on Tuesday.

Supporters of the former President, whose popularity amongst Republican voters seems untouched by the charges, assembled outside a golf club he owns. The Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals a significant 81% of Republicans perceive the charges as politically motivated, with 43% of respondents choosing Trump as their preferred candidate.
Trump’s closest contender, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, trails behind at 22%. The margin has shrunk since early May, however, Trump continues to maintain a significant lead. Trump has accused current President Joe Biden, a Democrat, of masterminding the federal case to undermine his campaign, a claim that Biden has consistently avoided commenting on.
As Trump’s legal battle unfolds, security measures are escalating due to the massive crowds anticipated in Miami. Preparations are underway to manage up to 50,000 people, and necessary road closures in the downtown area have been planned.

The charges against Trump are weighty. He is accused of taking numerous documents containing sensitive national-security secrets upon leaving the White House in January 2021 and mishandling them at his Florida estate. Additionally, the indictment alleges that Trump lied to officials who attempted to retrieve these documents.
However, legal experts assert that the criminal charges against Trump, unprecedented for a former or current president, will not impede his presidential run, or his ability to take office if found guilty. As the legal proceedings progress, the possibility of a trial in Florida is anticipated to occur post the November 2024 presidential election. Furthermore, Trump faces an unrelated trial in New York state court in March 2024.
