Uber is set to launch ‘Uber Shuttle’, a bus service specifically designed for daily commuters in Kolkata, marking a significant collaboration between the ride-sharing giant and the West Bengal government at the Bengal Global Business Summit 2023.
The heart of this project lies in Uber’s substantial investment of USD 10 million in the state, a plan that aims to create around 50,000 livelihood opportunities by 2025. This ambitious undertaking is not just a business venture; it’s a significant boost to the local economy and job market.
Uber Shuttle, much like its cab service, will offer an advanced booking feature. Passengers can reserve seats up to a week in advance, bringing predictability and ease to their daily commutes. The real game-changer, however, is the ability to track the live location and route of the bus, alongside receiving real-time updates on the estimated time of arrival – all through the familiar Uber app.
Beginning with a fleet of 10 buses, Uber plans to expand to 60 air-conditioned shuttles by March 2024. These vehicles will ply on predefined routes, seamlessly connecting the city’s business districts with residential areas. Operating from 6 am to 10 pm daily, these buses cater to the typical office hours, promising a comfortable and timely commute.
Each Uber Shuttle will accommodate between 19 to 50 passengers, ensuring comfort without overcrowding. In a unique approach, local fleet partners will operate these buses, leveraging Uber’s cutting-edge technology. This aspect of the plan underscores a community-focused approach, integrating local businesses into the broader framework of urban mobility.
State Transport Secretary Saumitra Mohan has lauded this partnership as a stride towards improving Kolkata’s public transportation landscape.
