The KSI World Women Economic and Business Summit, held on May 15, brought to light the significant challenges Malaysia faces in achieving workforce participation and leadership representation for women, despite their constituting nearly half of the population. With a gender gap persisting in the workforce, underrepresentation in leadership positions, and a scarcity of women-owned businesses, it is imperative to address these disparities head-on.
Tech companies have emerged as visionary leaders in this dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of Malaysia’s workforce, spearheading a powerful movement towards empowerment and inclusivity. These companies have embraced the profound importance of cultivating thriving workplace cultures that transcend traditional gender disparities. Driven by unwavering determination, they are revolutionising the professional landscape for women and reshaping the narrative of gender equality in Malaysia.
According to the Malaysian Department of Statistics, women constitute 48% of the population. However, the gender disparity in the workforce persists, with males accounting for 78% of the workforce and women accounting for 51%. Furthermore, while women make up 52% of university graduates, they are underrepresented in leadership and senior management positions. Women hold only 22% of board seats, falling short of Europe’s aim of 30% or more.
In her opening address at the KSI World Women Economic and Business Summit, Nancy Shukri, the Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, stated, “Promoting gender equality in the workplace is not only an issue of fairness but also an economic necessity. The government must take proactive measures to close the gender gap and provide support to enable women to fully participate in the workforce. The private sector must also take the lead in promoting diversity, inclusion, and gender equality.
Georg Chmiel, Co-Founder and Executive Chair of Juwai IQI, Asia’s largest real estate technology company, shared his perspective on the significance of gender diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
He stated, “At Juwai IQI, we believe that a diverse and inclusive workforce is key to driving innovation and success. We are committed to empowering women and providing equal opportunities for all. By creating an environment that values diversity and harnesses the talents of women, we can foster a workplace culture that not only benefits our company but also contributes to the economic growth and social progress of Malaysia.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected women in the workforce. Addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts to create an inclusive and supportive work environment that caters to the specific needs of women, including flexible work arrangements, adequate support systems, and opportunities for professional growth.
To foster a workplace culture that empowers women, multiple strategies must be implemented. Bringing back women who left the workforce, building a strong pipeline of young women, retaining women for the long term, and promoting women to leadership positions are all essential steps. By actively promoting and empowering women, organizations can create a leadership landscape that reflects the diversity of their workforce and unlocks the full potential of their talent pool.
