How did you become interested in what you are doing?
I became fascinated with successful business models that can solve problems faced by mankind. This has been the driving force behind my businesses all these years.
What is your greatest achievement so far?
It must be seeing my Biozek rapid tests being used around the globe to improve healthcare delivery especially in developing countries. The sheer satisfaction of changing people’s lives positively, motivates me more every day. I am proud that our technology has helped save many lives already throughout the world.
What do you like the most about your job?
The knowledge that I am creating an impact in people’s lives positively, by supplying them with medical solutions to battle against fatal diseases is very fulfilling. By having Biozek rapid diagnostic tests for COVID-19 out there globally for use, I think that we are truly making a difference. Above all, it is my team who I must thank every day for their commitment and hard work.
What would you say inspires you the most?
Doing what others think cannot be done or aren’t prepared to do themselves gives me the greatest pleasure. It has been this philosophy which has helped me achieve great things so far. If one were to look at where I came from, not many people would think that I could be where I am today. It is my ability to turn challenges into opportunities which has helped me succeed so far.
How do you deal with failure?
I always seek to work out why a specific strategy didn’t work. This helps me learn from my mistakes and not repeat them.
What is your biggest fear?
Every entrepreneur must have a healthy respect for failure because it can happen at any time, especially in business where things are changing constantly. However, I think the way we deal with our failures determines how far we can go once we start moving forward.
What would you say are your biggest strengths?
I have learned to identify my weaknesses and work on them over time. This has helped me surround myself with people who complement my strengths, so that we can all grow together. On the flip side, I am not one to take no for an answer when trying to achieve something or looking to solve a problem.
What is the most important thing you have learned from your parents?
That I am who I am today because of my upbringing and the values instilled in me as a child growing up. It has been this which has shaped my character and I must thank them for this daily even today after all these years.
What is the one thing you would like to change in the world?
That we all become more tolerant and not judge a book by its cover, where there is good in every individual regardless of who they are or what they look like. I think this can be achieved if we give everyone an equal opportunity, which in turn would result in a more progressive society.
When do you feel the happiest?
When all our staff members get together for an annual retreat – it’s a time where we celebrate our milestones over the past year and discuss what’s coming up for us going forward. With many new ideas being formed each year, bringing everyone together creates a feeling of hope and excitement at how much there still is to be achieved.
What is your favorite motto?
“You are not rich until you have something money cannot buy.” I believe in giving back to the community, be it my time or financial support which has helped me become the person I am today. There is no better feeling than knowing that what you have done for others has made a difference to their lives in one way or another.
Describe yourself in three words:
Determined, driven and real.
What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?
I set the theme of what I want to achieve at the beginning of each day and then fit in all the different tasks as and when they come up. It’s important to keep your eye on everything that is going on because opportunities will present themselves at any given moment if you are open to seeing them.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Always keep going.” I think this ties in with my philosophy about not taking no for an answer when trying to achieve something or solve a problem which has been fundamental to everything I have done so far. You should never give up before exhausting all other options available which might help make the impossible possible.
What is the most important thing one must do to be a great leader?
I think it’s important to be yourself. That way you set the highest standards possible for your employees who will respect you for that. You should also earn their trust by putting them first, because this is how they know that the team comes before the individual.
How do you go about selecting new staff members?
We look for people with a great work ethic and positive attitude to life in general, as well as other qualities which can be improved on after joining our company such as empathy, problem solving and communication skills. It’s also important to me that they are all able to bring something unique to our company culture where everyone has input into what we do moving forward.
What book would you recommend and why?
“The Alchemist” because of its inspirational message which helps you to believe in your dreams and achieve them. I think this is an important life lesson that everyone should be aware of, as it can help shape who they are and what they do with their life.
What is your favorite quote?
“If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.” I apply this philosophy to everything I do in life because it is so true. You get out of things what you put into them so if you are prepared to invest the necessary time and energy then success will follow.
